UFAW is an animal welfare charity but one with a difference.æ We help millions of animals around the world, from pets to wild and farm animals, and have done since 1926.æ Good animal welfare is about more than ensuring good health.æ ItÍs also about the quality of animalsÍ lives ? their feelings. Discovering, and then sharing, the knowledge unlocked by science is key to advancing animal welfare.æ ItÍs a huge challenge ? and as a charity, we rely on voluntary donations and new members in order to continue.æ æ Over the last 90 years UFAW has led the way in using science to bring about lasting change.æ In its first few years alone, it began a long (and eventually successful) campaign to abolish the use of the gin trap, championed the use of humane perfumes, free from animal products such as musk or civet, and joined a committee set up by the British Board of Film Censors to scrutinise the welfare of animals used in films. UFAW helps to educate tomorrowÍs animal welfare advocates by promoting and supporting education in animal welfare in a variety of ways.æ We also bring together veterinarians, animal care staff and others involved in animal care to share knowledge and best practice to drive forward advances in animal welfare.æ The charity has, and continues to be, consulted on draft legislation, guidelines and codes of practice relating to animal welfare.æ UFAW staff serve and have served on a number of national and international advisory committees and working groups and the charity provides information and advice to government departments, non-governmental organisations, universities and others.æ How your support makes a difference Just £3 a month could help us to provide educational materials to improve animal welfare in developing countries. £10 a month could help us to progress our outreach work to help animals around the world. A £20 donation will help us to fund initiatives like the garden wildlife health project. £50 helps us to fund projects such as our research into lifetime indicators of animal welfare. Leaving a legacy UFAWÍs work to reduce animal suffering and to improve animal welfare is only possible because of the generous support of those who leave a legacy.æ Gifts left in wills make up over 50% of our income, so every gift is extremely valuable to us.
